MOUNT ST. HELENS, WASHINGTON
Growth of a Volcanic Dome
There were many aspects to the recent eruptions of Mount St. Helens. One that has not been thoroughly examined is the environment during the growth of a series of volcanic domes.
It was an alien environment. Changes happened within a few days, sometimes within minutes. And there was the constant contrast between the general cold environment, whether summer or winter, and the intense heat radiated through cracks in the dome.
